Plastic vs. Fish

Moving Away From Plastic to Glass: Not Just a Trend

It seems like everyone around us is making the switch from plastic to glass. From Instagram hashtags to “plastic-free” monthly challenges, this new concept is becoming extremely popularized. But, what’s the real reasoning behind this trend, and what difference is it making on our planet?

What’s really going on?

Besides the fact that mason jars are ~super hip~ right now, switching from plastic to glass actually makes a huge ecological impact on Earth (who isn’t in such great shape right now). About 8 million tons of plastic are going into our oceans each year, and that number is still rising. It is estimated that by the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish!

Let’s look at how this affects us. The average life of a small plastic bottle is 450 years, which is about five and a half times our average human lifespan. Over time, this plastic degrades into pieces small enough to pass through the stomach and flesh of fish and other animals— and eventually makes its way into our bodies. Studies have shown numerous links to the dangers of plastic and that of our health.

What can we do?

A step in the right direction would be switching out plastic household items to reusable materials. Some examples are reusable grocery bags, reusable coffee cups, reusable food wraps and more. All of these items eliminate the need for a plastic alternative that will just be thrown away. If cutting out most of your plastic seems like too big of a task, you can start simple. An easy way to reduce plastic usage would simply be cutting out straws. 500 million straws are used and thrown away every day, and you can guess where these straws end up. Another simple step is switching the products you use (shampoo, face wash, makeup, etc.) for brands that are packaged in glass or as little packaging as possible.

What do we stand for?

At Wren and Wild, we are committed to doing what’s best for the Earth and every creature that resides on it! We carry over 50+ brands of clean, green beauty. This means the ingredients in the products we carry do not contain any parabens, fillers, harsh chemicals, etc. On top of this, all of these products are ethically produced and cruelty-free. Many of our brands are packaged in glass, and others switching over as you read this blog post. We also made the decision to not carry bottled water in our store and instead opted for a water cooler. We are constantly looking for ways to substitute plastic for other biodegradable sources. Stop by today to become a part of the change.
