Welcome to the second post in our series on Skin Care Routines. Today’s is on Toners. If you missed our first post on Skin Care Routine: Cleansers, you can read it here. And stay tune for future posts! So, let’s continue talking about your skin care routine …
Skin Care Routine: Toners
We’ve all heard of them, but how many of us actually know what they are? If your best recollection of toner is something from the 90s that looked like Windex and stung your skin dry, you’re not alone. But it turns out toners have done a lot of growing up since then, and could be a crucial step you’re missing in your skin care routine. Keep reading for our lowdown on facial toners and some of our plant-based favorites.
So, what are they?
To keep it simple, facial toners are (mostly) water based liquids used between cleansing and moisturizing. Their purpose is twofold: both to remove any additional yuckies left behind by your cleanser and to prepare skin for moisturization. Sound superfluous? Perhaps, but toners are way more than the palate-cleansing sorbet of your skincare routine. Toners also serve to rebalance the skin’s pH after cleansing, a crucial step in maintaining your skin’s barrier against harmful bacteria.
How do I use them?
Toners can be misted directly onto your face, applied with a cotton ball, or even sprinkled into your hands and gently patted on the skin. Whichever method you choose, toners should be used immediately after cleansing, preferably while skin is still a bit wet.
Most active ingredients in toners penetrate the skin better when it’s damp, delivering better results from both the toner and products you apply afterwards.
Any toners you’d recommend?
Choosing the best toner for your routine comes down to skin type and any specific concerns you’re looking to address. Toners vary widely in their ingredients and purpose, so there really is one for everyone.
Toners in your skin care routine
Toners for Dry Skin
If you have dry skin or are in need of extra hydration, Lab to Beauty’s The Refreshing Mist is a must-try. This CBD-infused spray is formulated with aloe vera and rose flower extract, delivering soothing, gentle hydration coupled with the anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD.
Toners for Oily or Acneic Skin
Those with oily or acneic skin should look for toners infused with natural astringents like tea tree oil or witch hazel to sweep away excess oil without over drying. One of our favorites in this category is Crux Supply Co.’s Tea Tree Toner, and we’re obsessed with its woodsy, fresh-from-the-forest scent.
Toners for sensitive or mature skin
Beauties with sensitive or mature skin can try Odacité’s Aloe + Immortelle Hydra-Repair Treatment Mist, praised by Vogue for its “miracle ingredient” fresh aloe vera juice. Each drop of this divinely-scented mist infuses skin with hydration, restoring plumpness and removing any redness. We love using this toner both on its own and as a refreshing way to set makeup.
So now you know all about toners and can go back to solving some of life’s other big mysteries.
